Uitkyk was established in 1712, but first vines were planted more than two centuries later by the Prussian nobleman, Hans von Carlowitz. The family is still remembered for its famous Carlonet blend made from Cinsaut and Cabernet Sauvignon. The few remaining bottles of this blend have become much-prized collectors’ items. Uikyks white wines are particularly popular, with the Uitkyk Sauvignon Blanc virtually sold out before its release. Its crisp, fresh acidity and delicious fruity flavours capture the essence of a Cape summer. The Chardonnay, on the other hand, is made seductive by a deft mix of oak, buttery and citrus flavours. Uitkyk is well worth a visit for one more reason: The magnificent homestead with splendid views is a neo-classical masterpiece and one of only three remaining double-storied, flat-roofed 18th-century town houses that still exists in its original form. During its restoration starting 1995, two beautiful murals were found on the entrance hall walls, buried under 15 layers of paint. Uitkyk has been awarded a Cape Times Memorial Medal for exceptional conservation of historic architecture.
