Welcome to Alto
Alto’s history dates back to 1693, when it was part of a larger farm named Groenrivier (“Green River”), granted by Governor Simon van der Stel. More than 200 years later Hennie Malan planted a choice of red varieties of vines, based on a shrewd assessment of the land. When Piet du Toit bought Alto in 1959, neither he nor the experts he called in for analysis and advice could fault the planting or the wines created by the Malans. So, Alto is, and always has been, red wine country. Meanwhile Alto has won more than 70 gold medals in international wine events. One of South Africa’s most prized labels, the Alto Estate, has been a Cape institution for over 50 years and has become known as this country’s “own red blend”. In particularly good years an Alto Cabernet Sauvignon is made – and in 2001a limited-release, maiden-vintage Alto Shiraz was made, sold exclusively from the farm and the Bergkelder Vinotèque. It was selected for the SAA First Class wine menu, a fitting environment for such an illustrious wine. Please be welcome to visit our Tasting Room and Museum Open daily from 10h00 – 16h00
